Biomarker may predict AKI following common medical procedures
Higher levels of a signaling glycoprotein were associated with acute kidney injury in patients who underwent coronary angiography or cardiac surgery, according to study results.
National paired kidney exchange program confers positive outcomes
According to a study, transplant recipients who received kidneys from a national paired kidney exchange program experienced similar post-transplant outcomes as those who received kidneys from other living donors. These results led David B. Leeser, MD, of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, to contend that “national paired kidney donor transplantation is an excellent way for patients to have a successful living donor kidney transplant.”

Proteinuria may help predict loss of kidney function after AKI
Monitoring proteinuria levels after hospitalization for acute kidney injury may be helpful in predicting subsequent risk for kidney disease progression, according to study results.
Higher protein intake linked to more rapid kidney function decline after myocardial infarction
A study of 2,248 patients, most of whom had normal kidney function at baseline, found patients who had higher protein intakes experienced a more rapid decline in kidney function following myocardial infarction.
Initial biopsy of deceased donor kidneys not reliable for predicting post-transplant outcomes
Initial biopsies of deceased donor kidneys, also known as procurement biopsies, often provided information that was neither reproducible nor associated with allograft outcomes, according to a recently published study. Therefore, researchers contended that procurement biopsy results should not be the deciding factor as to whether a kidney is suitable for transplant.
Article identifies solutions to increase PD use in the United States
In an editorial, researchers proposed potential solutions to increase peritoneal dialysis use in the United States that focused on social/educational, clinical and financial factors.
Folic acid may reduce odds of CKD progression, but only in select patients
Combining enalapril with folic acid supplementation reduced odds of chronic kidney disease progression in patients with CKD, according to this study. However, this potential benefit was seen only in patients with baseline B12 levels of at least 248 pmol/L.
Virtual CKD clinics may help practitioners deliver more timely care
A published study suggests virtual services that use electronic health records — shared between specialists and primary care physicians — can improve the care patients with chronic kidney disease receive.
Study: Deceased donor kidneys with AKI can successfully be used for transplant
Published findings indicate kidneys from deceased donors with AKI had recipient graft survival comparable to that of non-AKI kidneys and should, therefore, be considered for use in transplantation.
Online patient tool may increase likelihood of kidney transplant
Published research suggests patients on hemodialysis who used a web-based application may be more likely to receive a kidney transplant compared with non-users. In addition, more logins to the tool was associated with shortened time to transplantation.
