Key takeaways:

  • The APEX award was one of six total given to Healio this year.
  • The special report examines several diets and dietary guidelines and can help guide physician-patient conversations.

The Healio news staff received an APEX award in the category of One-of-a-Kind Publications – Electronic for its special report on nutrition.

“Honestly, this is one of the projects I’m most proud of. I can’t say enough about the work our team put into it — from the research and writing to its design,” John Schoen, MA, an editorial director at Healio, said. “It was meant to help clinicians have informed conversations with their patients about specific diets based on current scientific evidence, and I hopeful we’ve done that. I’m also grateful to the physicians who gave their input and valuable time to help us make it happen.”

APEX awards recognize publication excellence and achievement of communications effectiveness in graphic design and editorial content across 13 categories and 100 subcategories.

The awards received over 1,100 entries this year, of which just 100 received the designation as grand award winners.

The special report, Food Is Medicine: A Healio Guide to Diets, features recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 and provides overviews on several diets, what they entail and their health benefits based on current scientific evidence.

Kurt R. Wharton, MD, FACOG, chief of the Women’s and Children’s Clinical Care Programs for Beaumont Health in Michigan and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Oakland University’s William Beaumont School of Medicine, and Justin F. Tondt, MD, an assistant professor of family and community medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, also contributed to the report.

Healio received a total of 6 APEX awards this year, including two grand awards. It is the fifth consecutive year Healio’s content has been recognized by the APEX awards.
