Top in women’s health: Decrease in contraceptive use; increase in perinatal PTSD diagnoses

The use of most contraceptive methods steadily decreased from 2019 to 2022, with the exception of vasectomy, according to results published in JAMA Network Open.

Researchers observed that new prescriptions for contraceptives decreased from 25 million in 2019 to fewer than 22 million in 2022. The results also demonstrated a workforce shift in contraception distribution, with more advanced practice clinicians providing IUDs, implants and new prescriptions.

“In 2022, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization dramatically changed the landscape of reproductive health, causing ripple effects that will extend beyond abortion care,” Julia Strasser, DrPH, MPH, an assistant professor in the department of health policy and management at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, and colleagues wrote. “Contraception may be especially vulnerable to further restrictions and barriers, both to those seeking care and those providing it.”

It was the top story in women’s health last week.

In another top story, from 2008 to 2020, the overall predicted probability of perinatal PTSD diagnosis increased for all ethnicities and races and was highest for white women at all time points, according to a cross-sectional study published in Health Affairs.
