BOSTON — AI “is holding real promise” in streamlining tasks such as in-basket message responses, chart summaries, coding, billing and prior authorizations, according to Deepti Pandita, MD, FACP, FAMIA.

However, “we still have a lot to do” in terms of applying AI to “the real bedside care,” said Pandita, an associate professor of medicine, vice president of Clinical Informatics and Chief Medical Information Officer at the University of California, Irvine.

“These models ... look very good, but you have to dive a little deeper to make sure they’re actually doing the work that you want them to do,” Pandita said. “We don’t think that AI is going to replace clinicians anytime soon.”

Pandita was the moderator and co-panelist of a session on AI at the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting. She also participated in a session at last year’s meeting on how AI could help support clinical decision-making.
