Top in ID: Rise in measles cases; avian flu response plan

Nearly one-third of all measles cases reported in the United States since January 2020 were reported in the first quarter of 2024, raising concerns that the country could lose its measles elimination status, according to CDC researchers.
“Clinicians have a crucial role in helping to prevent measles and its complications, and maintain the U.S. measles elimination status,” Adria D. Mathis, MSPH, from the CDC’s Division of Viral Diseases, told Healio. “Their efforts are needed to help encourage routine vaccination and vaccination before international travel, identify communities at risk for measles transmission and rapidly diagnose and report measles cases.”
It was the top story in infectious disease last week.
In another top story, CDC officials recently met with members of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists and the Association of Public Health Laboratories to discuss avian influenza response plans. Although the risk for avian influenza to the public remains low, the CDC encouraged state health officials to make response plans.
