VIDEO: Updates in health IT
SAN DIEGO — In this video, Ross W. Hilliard, MD, FACP, discusses highlights from a session on health IT, including the use of reporting tools within electronic health records and regulatory changes related to EHRs.
Hilliard, an associate professor of medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and member of the ACP’s Medical Informatics Committee, said that most EHR systems have reporting tools that clinicians can use to identify trends among their patients, such as influenza cases and how many patients require telehealth visits.
The session also reviewed regulations “that impact physician groups of all sizes,” Hilliard said, including information blocking and the No Surprises Act, as well as privacy concerns related to electronic health information.
“It kind of falls on us as physicians ... to help educate patients about their potential risks if they are sharing or requesting their health data to an app or another service that may not have the same legal obligation to protect it that we do as physicians and health entities,” he said.
