Revised clinical practice guidelines on diabetes management in chronic kidney disease have been released by the nonprofit organization Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes, or KDIGO.

Speaking to Healio, Sankar Dass Navaneethan, MD, MS, MPH, a Garabed Eknoyan MD Endowed Professor and Associate Chief of Nephrology at Baylor College of Medicine, noted that “between 2020 and 2022, the evidence supporting newer medication use in this population with kidney disease and diabetes came out pretty rapidly, warranting an update in 2022.”

The revised recommendations include a focus on comprehensive treatment, from lifestyle interventions to pharmacotherapy such as SGLT2 inhibitors.

“The guideline recommends that everything that we do for our patients should be based on the foundation of lifestyle modifications,” Navaneethan said. “That includes healthy diet, adoption of regular physical activity, avoidance of smoking and trying to maintain the BMI within the recommended limits.”

He also encouraged providers to engage patients in self-management.

“They’ve got to take control of their health with the support of ours,” Navaneethan said.
