The American Association of Clinical Endocrinology has updated its guidance for diabetes care, which include 170 new and updated recommendations on prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

In this video, S. Sethu K. Reddy, MD, MBA, FRCPC, FACP, MACE, president of the AACE, and Susan S. Samson, MD, PhD, FRCPC, FACE, interim president-elect and treasurer of the AACE, discuss some of the most important updates that primary care providers should be aware of.

“The highlights for me are about the treatment of diabetes being individualized, personalized,” Reddy told Healio. “More and more, I think the presence of cardiovascular disease or renal disease is directing the PCP to certain types of therapies.”

A “running theme” of the guidance is weight management, Reddy added, and how it affects prediabetes, diabetes, gestational diabetes and related complications.

Samson said the guidance also outlines vaccination schedules for patients with prediabetes and diabetes as well as information on supplements, sleep hygiene, depression screening and more.

“There is a lot of practical advice in there, even beyond medical management,” she said.
