Following the FDA’s authorization and CDC’s recommendation of bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccines, U.S. officials said that Americans will likely need annual COVID-19 vaccine doses, similar to influenza.
At a White House briefing, Anthony S. Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said, “we likely are moving toward a path with a vaccination cadence similar to that of the annual influenza vaccine, with annual, updated COVID-19 shots matched to the currently circulating strains for most of the population.” Additionally, President Joe Biden said that a new approach to COVID-19 means most Americans will receive “one COVID-19 shot, once a year, each fall.” However, experts wonder if yearly COVID-19 booster shots will be necessary.
