The honor roll list, which is designed to help patients and their physicians make informed decisions about where to receive quality care, recognizes the top 20 institutions that deliver “exceptional treatment across many areas of care,” according to U.S. News. The data used in this year’s rankings excluded visits in which patients were diagnosed with COVID-19 and visits for months in 2020, in which the hospital’s COVID-19 rate was higher than the national average, in an effort to mitigate the pandemic-associated disruptions in the analysis, according to a methodology report.

This is the first year with COVID-19 data, but it was not the only new addition to the report. Also new this year was “an expanded set of health equity measures that highlights which hospitals provide more care to low-income patients and which have racial disparities in certain surgical outcomes” and ratings for three new specialties: ovarian cancer surgery, uterine cancer surgery and prostate cancer surgery, according to U.S. News.

“For patients considering their options for where to get care, the Best Hospitals rankings are designed to help them and their medical professionals identify hospitals that excel in the kind of care they may need,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, said in the release. “The new cancer ratings provide patients facing surgery for prostate cancer or gynecological cancer with previously unavailable information to assist them in making a critical health care decision.”
