VIDEO: Best practices for antimicrobial stewardship
CHICAGO — About 70% of antibiotics are used in the outpatient setting, often without proper indications, according to a speaker at the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting.
At least 30% of antibiotic prescriptions are not necessary, James “Brad” Cutrell, MD, FIDSA, an associate professor of medicine and the medical director of antimicrobial stewardship at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, said during his presentation.
To curb antibiotic overuse, Cutrell urged attendees to practice antimicrobial stewardship, which he said is about having the “right drug for the right bug at the right time and the right dose for the right duration.”
In this video, Cutrell discusses best practices for implementing antimicrobial stewardship in the outpatient setting.
