As proton pump inhibitors are being increasingly used for “less clear indications and indeterminate durations,” the American Gastroenterological Association announced a clinical practice update on deprescribing the agents in certain patients.

According to the organization, all patients receiving PPIs should undergo regular review for their ongoing indication for use, and physicians should consider deprescribing in those without a definitive indication. In addition, the AGA stated that most patients on twice-daily PPI dosing may be decreased to once-daily dosing.
