The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that two Lysol products are the first to be approved to protect against SARS-CoV-2, according to a release by the manufacturer.

The two surface disinfectant products, Lysol Disinfectant Spray and Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist, were approved based on results from laboratory testing that showed they were effective in preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces, according to a press release issued by the EPA.

“EPA is committed to identifying new tools and providing accurate and up-to-date information to help the American public protect themselves and their families from the novel coronavirus,” Andrew Wheeler, an EPA administrator, said in the release. “EPA's review of products tested against this virus marks an important milestone in President Trump’s ‘all-of-government’ approach to fighting the spread of COVID-19.”

Before a product can legally claim to kill certain pathogens, the EPA must review data on the product to authorize such claims, according to the release. Because new viruses are not immediately available for laboratory testing, the EPA activated guidance in January to allow manufacturers to provide the agency with data that demonstrates that its products are effective against viruses that are more difficult to kill than SARS-CoV-2. Products are then placed on the agency’s list of products that meet the criteria to use against COVID-19.

The two Lysol products are the first from this list to have laboratory testing reviewed by the agency and be approved for label claims against SARS-CoV-2.

According to a press release issued by the company, Lysol Disinfectant Spray was tested in accordance with EPA guidelines and was found to kill the virus at 2 minutes of use.

“The EPA's approval recognizes that using Lysol Disinfectant Spray can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 on hard, non-porous surfaces,” Rahul Kadyan, executive vice president of hygiene for Reckitt Benckiser, the manufacturer of Lysol products, said in a press release issued by the company. “In the face of the pandemic, Lysol continues to work with a wide range of scientific and health experts to educate the public on the importance of hygiene.”
