Among the top stories in hematology/oncology last week were new guidelines from the American Society of Breast Surgeons that recommended women with average risk for breast cancer begin annual screening mammography at age 40 years and a Q&A that focused on the potential of chimeric antigen receptor T cells for treating pediatric solid tumors.

Other highlights included a study that found six factors may predict invasive breast cancer recurrence among patients diagnosed with and treated for ductal carcinoma in situ and results from two trials to be presented at the Annual Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting that suggested early treatment with lenalidomide significantly reduced the risk for progression of high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma to symptomatic multiple myeloma and that a low-fat diet reduces risk for breast cancer death among postmenopausal women.

American Society of Breast Surgeons screening mammography guidelines recommend early assessment

New guidelines from the American Society of Breast Surgeons recommend women with average risk for breast cancer begin annual screening mammography at age 40 years, following a formal risk assessment as early as age 25 years. Read more.

CAR T cells show potential for treatment of pediatric solid tumors

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine have used chimeric antigen receptor T cells targeting B7-H3 to attack certain solid tumors in several pediatric cancer models. Read more.

Six prognostic factors identified for invasive breast cancer recurrence after ductal carcinoma in situ

Six factors may predict invasive breast cancer recurrence among patients diagnosed with and treated for ductal carcinoma in situ, according to results of a systematic review and meta-analyses published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Read more.

Lenalidomide delays progression to multiple myeloma

Early treatment with lenalidomide significantly reduced the risk for progression of high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma to symptomatic multiple myeloma, according to results of a randomized trial scheduled for presentation at the Annual Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting. Read more.

Low-fat diet reduces risk for breast cancer death among postmenopausal women

Postmenopausal women reduced their breast cancer mortality risk by adopting a low-fat diet that included increased consumption of vegetables, fruits and grains, according to results from a randomized Women’s Health Initiative clinical trial scheduled for presentation at the Annual Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting.
