NEW ORLEANS — Maintaining safety and preventing transmission of hot bugs, such as Clostridium difficile and Candida auris, is a vital role of an internist, Erica S. Shenoy, MD, PhD, associate chief of the Infection Control Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, told Healio Internal Medicine.
Primary care physicians should consider the environment and personal protective equipment as sources of infection, she said.
“Stewardship is becoming expected across all health care environments,” she said. “We know that stewardship interventions work ... and are associated with a decrease in resistance ... and reducing the amount of inappropriate antibiotic use.”
