NEW ORLEANS – Clinicians can play an important role in stopping elder abuse by looking for signs of trauma or neglect during examinations, Carmel Bitondo Dyer, MD, executive director of the Consortium on Aging, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, told Healio Internal Medicine.

“We as clinicians have to take a look at the red flags, such as dementia, malnutrition, bruises that appear on the neck or the face or the trunk,” she said. “We have to look for patterns of excessive use of the health care system, such as hospitalization and emergency room visits.”
