The American Academy of Family Physicians has announced its support for a caucus focused on raising awareness and providing support for primary care, according to a press release.

The Congressional Primary Care Caucus was introduced by two members of the House of Representatives, Republican Rep. David Rouzer of North Carolina and Democratic Rep. Joe Courtney of Connecticut.

"Increasing access to primary care is one of the best ways to promote better health outcomes and control costs," Courtney said in a statement. "I am looking forward to promoting health care policy that recognizes and capitalizes on the importance of primary care in underserved areas and works to strengthen our primary care workforce nationwide."

The AAFP stated that the organization believes the caucus will lead to the federal support necessary to fix the shortage of primary care physicians.

"Congress must have accurate information about the multiple factors affecting the primary care workforce and patients' access to services," Wanda Filer, MD, MBA, AAFP president, said in the release. "Medical education funding, payment for quality of services, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated care, and meeting primary care needs of underserved Americans — these are big issues. They require the focused attention that the Primary Care Caucus will provide."
