From international law firm Arnold & Porter LLP comes timely views on current regulatory and legislative topics that weigh on the minds of today’s physicians and health care executives.

In its semiannual report to Congress released last month, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) reported another record year for both fraud and abuse recoveries and new criminal cases. For fiscal year 2012, the agency reported expected recoveries of $6 billion from its investigative activities. The agency excluded 3,131 individuals and entities from participating in federal health care programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, while participating in almost 800 criminal cases. The OIG also participated in almost 400 civil actions, including false claims and civil monetary penalty settlements and provider self-disclosure resolutions.
