The International Antiviral Society-USA released updated guidelines today for the treatment and prevention of HIV, outlining new findings, regimens, approaches and data.
Less than 20% of teen girls with PID screened for HIV, syphilis
Among adolescent girls with pelvic inflammatory disease, screening rates for HIV and syphilis are low, according to findings published in Pediatrics. “The majority of diagnoses of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) among young women occur in the emergency room setting, rather than in primary care practices,” Monika K. Goyal, MD, MSCE, assistant professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at George Washington University and director of research in the division of emergency medicine and trauma services at Children’s National Health System, told Infectious Diseases in Children. “However, our findings strongly suggest there is ample room for improvement.”

National HIV Testing Day: High-risk patients not screened frequently enough
Today is National HIV Testing Day, which the CDC recognizes each year on June 27 to promote the importance of detecting, testing and preventing HIV. Since 2006, the CDC has recommended one-time screening for all patients aged 13 to 64 years and screening at least once a year for high-risk patients. However, data published recently in MMWR show HIV testing intervals often exceed 1 year among high-risk groups, and that many of these patients have never been tested.
Regulatory T cells may help block mother-to-child HIV transmission
ATLANTA — Infants born to mothers with HIV who were not infected at the time of birth had significantly higher levels of regulatory lymphocyte T cells than infants who were infected in utero, according to research presented at ASM Microbe.
FDA: HIV drug dolutegravir possibly linked to serious birth defects
The FDA issued a safety alert today warning patients and providers about a potential risk for neural tube birth defects in babies born to women with HIV who received dolutegravir during early pregnancy.
