12-year-old boy admitted for febrile illness
A previously healthy 12-year-old boy is admitted to the inpatient ward in mid-July for evaluation of a febrile illness. He had a rapid onset of fever beginning eight days prior to admission with temperatures typically around 102ºF, although as high as 105ºF. In addition to persistent fever, myalgias and general malaise, the patient complains of a severe frontal headache and nonspecific abdominal pain. Three days ago he developed a nonpruritic erythematous rash on his trunk with gradual spread to his bilateral upper and lower extremities.
New option available for treating head lice
The FDA has approved Ulesfia 5% benzyl alcohol lotion, the first non-neurotoxic topical head lice prescription treatment for use in children aged 6 months and older.

A 9-year-old boy with fever, rash
A 9-year-old boy was seen at an outside emergency room for evaluation of fever and rash of nine days duration. He had been seen by his primary physician after one day of illness and was diagnosed with a viral syndrome. The rash was first noted on his arms and legs but eventually involved his entire body. He also complained of headache and abdominal pain. He had one episode of emesis and several loose stools. At the emergency room, he was given a shot of ceftriaxone and transferred to Carolinas Medical Center for further evaluation and management.
