Abdominal discomfort, sore throat, painful skin lesions in a 6-year-old female
A previously healthy 6-year-old female had a minor illness with fever and upper respiratory tract infection symptoms about a week ago that lasted 1 day. Then, for the following 2 to 3 days, she felt well. However, she began feeling sick again with subjective fever, abdominal discomfort and sore throat with the appearance of some mildly painful skin lesions. Her throat was described to be red with white exudate by her mother, along with some painful erythema of her vaginal mucosa as well. Because she seemed to be getting worse, without a confident diagnosis, the next day she was admitted to the hospital for evaluation.
A 13-year-old boy presents with red, annular rash on torso, thighs
A 13-year-old boy without significant past medical history presented to the outpatient dermatology clinic for evaluation of a rash. The patient reported development of a red, annular rash on his chest 2 weeks ago that increased in size rapidly. Over the previous few days, similar lesions developed on his abdomen, back and thighs, yet he denied pruritus or pain. The patient tried oral diphenhydramine and a topical steroid cream without improvement of the rash.
Crisaborole 2% ointment safe, effective treatment for atopic dermatitis
LOS ANGELES — Two phase 3 studies presented at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Meeting confirmed that the investigational crisaborole topical ointment, 2%, was safe and effective for patients with mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis.
Pustular-vesicular lesions on extremities, trunk in infant female
A 1-year-old female is referred for admission to the hospital for the evaluation of fever and a rash. The patient’s past history is positive for an acute hematologic malignancy with relapse. It was noted about 1 week prior to admission that the patient had some mildly painful bumps appearing on her extremities. The parents thought this to be a heat rash at first, but when it persisted along with the development of some fever, definitive evaluation was sought. Exam revealed a fever of 101.5°F, with the skin revealing numerous scattered pustular-vesicular lesions on her extremities and trunk as shown (Figures 1-3).
4-year-old male with bleeding bump on cheek
A 4-year-old boy presents with a 6-week history of a fast-growing, friable, red papule on his left cheek. The boy’s mother reports that a couple of weeks preceding the development of the lesion he had been bitten by a mosquito in the same area. She also states this new bump has bled several times over the last month, but it does not seem to cause the child any pain. She denies fevers or recent illness. She does report that a child in preschool “had something similar just last week.”
