Wide variation exists in prescribing practices of systemic agents for pediatric atopic dermatitis
A survey of physicians in the United States and Canada found that there is great variation in prescribing practices of systemic agents to treat atopic dermatitis, according to results published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Consensus treatment plans developed for juvenile dermatomyositis with persistent rash
The Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance developed the following three treatment plans for patients with juvenile dermatomyositis and persistent skin rash: intravenous immunoglobulin; mycophenolate mofetil; and cyclosporine.
FDA approves Enbrel to treat children with plaque psoriasis
The FDA has approved Amgen’s supplemental biologics license application for expanded use of Enbrel for treating pediatric patients aged 4-17 years with chronic moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, according to a press release from the drug’s manufacturer.
A 7-year-old girl presents with a ‘stubborn blackhead’
A 7-year-old girl presented to the pediatric dermatology department with what her mother described as a “stubborn blackhead.” The lesion had been present at birth but only recently had the family noticed “zit material and hairs growing out of it.” After plucking the hairs, the patient’s mother tried “squeezing out the rest of the pus but only a little came out.” The patient was brought to the hospital because the mother is worried that the lesion looks larger, despite the fact that she has been treating it with topical tretinoin 0.025% cream nightly. The patient had a normal, uneventful birth history, and denies any recent fevers, stiff neck or other recent illnesses.
Febrile illness, progressive rash in 5-month-old girl
A 5-month-old girl presents to the ED for evaluation of a febrile illness and a progressive rash. The onset of the rash began rather suddenly 4 days earlier at multiple sites, primarily on the left leg, the right side of the face and left side of the trunk, and grew in size (Figures 1-4). The lesions began as small red bumps that quickly grew in number to become large, confluent patches transforming into widespread erosions, scattered about on dry skin. There was no history of discrete vesicles, pustules or blisters being seen.
Xeljanz shows promise as treatment for alopecia areata in adolescents

SAN FRANCISCO — Despite AAP recommendations for head lice management, 30% of summer camps were either unaware of guidelines or had no formal lice policy, according to survey results presented at the 2016 AAP National Conference and Exhibition.
Painful, vesicular facial rash, red left eye in 10-year-old male
A 10-year-old male presents with a painful vesicular rash on his face and a red left eye. The onset was 3 days earlier, when he complained to his mother that his brother had hit him in the eye, which was followed by some itching of the left side of his face and eye. The next day the eye was erythematous with some discharge, and he was seen by his primary and diagnosed with “pink eye” and prescribed gentamicin ophthalmic drops.
