Key takeaways:

  • Four hospitals claimed No. 1 spots in 10 pediatric specialties.
  • U.S. News & World Report added an 11th specialty this year: pediatric and adolescent behavioral health.

Boston Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston topped this year’s U.S. News & World Report’s list of best children’s hospitals.

This year, U.S. News ranked the children’s hospitals by region and specialty and published an unranked “Honor Roll” of the top 10 overall. It took a similar approach ranking the best U.S. hospitals that treat adults earlier this year.

“These hospitals are remarkable in that they excel in not just one or two specialties, but really have a breadth of excellence across each of the specialties that we evaluate,” Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News, said in a press release. “A family that is in need of pediatric care, regardless of what kind of care that child needs... can be assured that an honor roll hospital is going to have them in good hands.”

Boston Children’s Hospital ranked first in neonatology, pediatric urology and neurology; Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia topped the rankings for pediatric diabetes and endocrinology and orthopedics; Cincinnati Children’s was No. 1 for pediatric cancer, gastroenterology and pulmonology; and Texas Children’s Hospital of Houston claimed the top spots for pediatric cardiology and nephrology.

The rankings include a new specialty this year: pediatric and adolescent behavioral health. Many programs tied in this category, according to the release, so U.S. News published a list of the top 50 programs nationwide.

“This year’s inclusion of behavioral health as a new specialty is significant, as one in five U.S. Children has a mental, emotional, behavioral or developmental disorder, according to the Department of Health and Human Services,” Harder said in the release.

The other hospitals included in the honor roll were Children’s Hospital of Colorado in Aurora, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego and Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Last year, Cincinnati Children’s was ranked No. 1 overall on the best children’s hospital list — before U.S. News began publishing its unranked honor roll. It also ranked high across several specialties.
