“We are leaning into the concepts of advocacy and community,” Elizabeth Murray, DO, MBA, faculty director of child health communication at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester, New York, and chair of the AAP Conference Planning Group, told Healio.

According to Murray, the AAP partnered with the nonprofit organization Social Offset, which helps people find local charities that align with their values.

Healio spoke with Murray about what attendees can expect at the conference this year.

Healio: What went into planning this year’s program?

Murray: Both the plenary sessions and the regular educational sessions were intentionally chosen to provide a mix of hot topics and the more classic core subjects. We know that attendees range from seasoned pediatricians who have been in practice for 20 years to current trainees trying to decide their area of focus. We want to make sure that attendees can learn about a new policy statement but also gather with colleagues who share the same interests during the section and council meetings.

Healio: Are there any special events happening this year?

Murray: There will be many special events this year! It is tradition that there is one big night where some type of group adventure is planned within the community we are visiting. We will be going to SeaWorld on Sept. 29. Given the focus on advocacy, we have teamed with Social Offset, which allows attendees to contribute to local organizations that share the same mission of child health and well-being. For those who are Swiftie-inspired, we have the Beads for Change opportunity where attendees can make bracelets. Proceeds will go to the AAP's Friends of Children Fund or Social Offset.

Healio: What are you most looking forward to this year?

Murray: I am so excited to again bring everyone together in person this year. We are currently experiencing very tense times, and I think many people feel very unsettled right now, and rightfully so. I always feel better after going to dinner with my best friend. The conference to me is like dinner with your best friend on steroids: thousands of like-minded people coming together to do the best for children.

Healio: What else should attendees know?

Murray: We are aware of the concern of an impending tropical storm. Attendees will be notified of any logistical changes. Make sure to bring your colorful sneakers and wear them to the opening plenary sessions on Saturday morning. I can't wait to see everyone!
