Key takeaways:

  • Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center was named the No. 1 children’s hospital for the first time.
  • Boston Children’s Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital rounded out the top three.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center was ranked No. 1 on the U.S. News & World Report’s list of best children’s hospitals for the first time.

The hospital rose two places from its prior ranking at No. 3, breaking a 9-year streak atop the list by Boston Children’s Hospital, which dropped to second this year.

U.S. News & World Report made changes to the list criteria this year to place less of an emphasis on expert opinion and increase the weight given to measures like commitment to best practices and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, the publication said.

“Parents of sick children face many difficult challenges, including how to identify the best children’s hospital to treat their illness or condition," Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, said in a press release. “The rankings, which are increasingly determined by objective measures of hospital quality, can help them make informed decisions.”

Cincinnati Children’s also ranked first in the pediatric cancer, neonatology and urology specialty categories; second in pediatric gastroenterology and pulmonology; third in nephrology and orthopedics; fourth in neurology; and seventh in pediatric cardiology and heart surgery. It tied for first in pediatric diabetes and endocrinology with Boston Children’s, which ranked first in gastroenterology and neurology.

“We are incredibly proud and honored to be recognized as the best pediatric hospital in the nation,” Steve Davis, MD, MMM, president and CEO of Cincinnati Children’s, said in a press release. “This distinction only confirms what we have always known — that we have outstanding, talented team members who are unmatched in their dedication to ensuring that all children have access to exceptional care.”

Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston placed third overall and first for pulmonology, nephrology and cardiology. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia placed fourth overall and first in orthopedics, and Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., ranked fifth.

Rounding out the top 10 were Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego and Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore.
