Paul A. Volberding, MD
Paul A. Volberding, MD, is a professor emeritus of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

He was trained in medical oncology but became involved in the AIDS epidemic when it first appeared in the 1980s. He has been involved in HIV-related care, research and professional education his entire career. Volberding cofounded the world’s first comprehensive HIV clinic in 1983 and has had many leadership opportunities, including cofounding the International Antiviral Society-USA, serving as president of the International AIDS Society and being the leader of the Center for AIDS Research at UCSF since it was first organized until his retirement in 2019. He has been the co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes since it was launched in 1988, and he is proud to serve as the Chief Medical Editor of Infectious Diseases News, part of the Healio family of publications.
Volberding is an active member of the National Academy of Medicine, which has addressed many health concerns related to pediatric infectious diseases.
