The FDA announced additional measures for making infant formula more available following prior guidance which increased importation flexibilities.
Beginning in June, 686,650 cans of Similac (Abbott) will be imported from Spain, the agency stated in an update. Specific formula products include Similac Total Comfort Stage 1, Similac Total Comfort (up to 24 months) and Similac NeoSure; these products will be made available on Similac.com as well as other online retailers. Abbott additionally plans to provide formula as emergency samples for critical areas of low supply as outlined by the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. Following the review of nutritional adequacy and safety, the FDA will continue to enforce discretion for formulas imported into the U.S., according to the update.
The agency expects the resumption of formula production at Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis, Michigan, facility will assist in improving supply availability and continues to advise against diluting or making infant formula at home.
