VIDEO: Managing children who have been excluded from child care programs
NEW YORK – At the 2017 Infectious Diseases in Children Symposium, Timothy R. Shope, MD, MPH, discussed exclusion criteria for pediatricians to use to determine when to allow students to return to child care or schools after being excluded from the programs.
Shope, a pediatrician and associate professor of pediatrics in the department of pediatrics, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, discussed the evidence-based exclusion criteria developed by the AAP and that each state has its own set of criteria that do not necessarily follow the AAP criteria. The AAP criteria might be usable when there are gaps in the state criteria, he said.
“We want to try to minimize inappropriate exclusions and maximize the time when children can be safely in child care when appropriate,” he told Infectious Diseases in Children.
