WASHINGTON — A new regimen, called CoMMPlete, effectively reduced acne among a cohort of student athletes, according to data presented at the 2016 American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting.

“Cleansing, medicating, moisturizing, and photoprotection comprise a complete acne vulgaris (AV) management regimen,” Brian B. Adams, MD, MPH, professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and colleagues wrote. “However, complete topical AV treatment regimen investigations in adolescent student athletes are scarce.”

For patients aged 9 years and older, Epiduo gel (0.1% adapalene and 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, Galderma Laboratories; A/BPO) is indicated for the topical treatment of AV, the researchers wrote.

In this open-label, single center study, the researchers evaluated the CoMMPlete regimen, which consists of A/BPO gel, Cetaphil foam wash (Galderma Laboratories) and Cetaphil moisturizer SPF 30 (Galderma Laboratories). They evaluated the regimen for 8 weeks in 28 student athletes aged 12 to 18 years with mild to moderate acne. All were actively participating in Texas University Interscholastic League athletics. After 8 weeks, the researchers assessed adherence, lesion counts, adverse events, satisfaction and cutaneous irritation.

At follow-up, lesion counts were significantly reduced, and the researchers observed good tolerability and patient satisfaction. Most patients, who exhibited high compliance and adherence, experienced no cutaneous irritation. The most common adverse events were dry skin, skin exfoliation and erythema.

“The CoMMPlete regimen helps optimize AV treatment outcomes in young athletes,” Adams and colleagues wrote. – by Will Offit
