CDC: Latest cyclosporiasis cases may not be linked to Midwest outbreak

Nearly 650 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported to the CDC as of early September, according to the CDC website.
As of Sept. 6, the CDC received reports of 646 cases of Cyclospora cayetanensis infection from 24 states: Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York (including New York City), Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Currently, the CDC is collaborating with the Texas Department of Health and Human Services (DSHS) and local public health departments to investigate cases of cyclosporiasis reported among Texas residents. In 2013, 307 cases of C. cayetanensis infection have been reported in Texas, most of which were reported in June and July and were from the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
The CDC and DSHS are investigating possible common exposures and attempting to determine whether they are linked to an outbreak in other states. Although the investigation continues, available evidence suggests that not all of the cases of cyclosporiasis in the various states are directly related to each other, according to the CDC.
