FDA, CDC and state health departments are investigating the cause of a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis that has hospitalized at least 18 people.

The first two cases of cyclosporiasis were reported on June 28 in two Iowa residents with no history of international travel. CDC has been notified of more than 285 confirmed cases in multiple states: Nebraska, Connecticutt, Texas, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin and New Jersey. Illinois and Kansas have also notified CDC of one case each that may have been acquired out of state. CDC has confirmed five cases of Cyclospora in CDC laboratories.

The source of the outbreak has not been identified, and it is not known whether all of the cases are part of the same outbreak, according to the CDC. There have been no common social events identified between the case patients.

Health officials are continuing to monitor the situation.
