The FDA is advising consumers to avoid pistachios and pistachio-containing products after Salmonella was found in a pistachio processing plant owned by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc. in Terra Bella, Calif.

This warning was given despite the fact that there have yet to be any reported illnesses stemming from the contaminated food. This is believed to be the strongest warning regarding food safety the FDA has issued in a situation where no illnesses were reported. Some public health officials say this may be indicative of the tougher stance regarding food safety the FDA will now be taking under the Obama administration.

In response to the FDA’s warning, Terra Bella Inc. recalled all of its lots of roasted in-shell pistachios and roasted shelled pistachios that were produced from nuts harvested in 2008. The company is also recalling raw shelled pistachios from the 2008 crop that were not roasted prior to retail sale.

Officials from the FDA and the California Department of Public Health are continuing investigation.
