The annual Infectious Diseases in Children Symposium in New York City will welcome its first new course director in 23 years to lead the 2010 edition of the annual course, which will feature all of the latest information on vaccines and upcoming treatment modalities that long-time course-goers have come to trust.

David W. Kimberlin, MD, who is a professor of pediatrics and co-director in the division of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will replace Philip Brunell, MD, who retired last fall.

“I am excited by the opportunity to follow Phil Brunell and continue to build upon the strong foundation that he has established for this meeting over the past two decades,” Kimberlin said. “This symposium already is one of the leading CME meetings in the country, focusing on pediatric [infectious diseases] issues. To ensure that it continues to grow, leading pediatric infectious diseases experts from around the country, most of whom serve already on the Infectious Diseases in Children Editorial Board, will form the newly established program committee to develop the symposium. This is an exciting time, and I look forward to seeing everyone the weekend before Thanksgiving in New York City as we embrace these new opportunities.”

The meeting, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 20-21 at the New York Marriott Marquis in Manhattan, will feature an expert panel of speakers who will address the latest recommendations for vaccine administration, discuss new treatment modalities for managing emerging diseases and review the latest clinical data on treatments for respiratory illnesses. The meeting will also feature some traditional favorites, including the popular What’s Your Diagnosis feature from James H. Brien, MD.

“We are pleased that Dr. Kimberlin has agreed to serve as the course director of the Infectious Diseases in Children Symposium,” said Joan-Marie Stiglich, ELS, senior vice president of SLACK Incorporated. “With David and the program committee’s leadership and expertise, returning and new attendees can expect an interactive, thought-provoking educational experience that will build upon the great 20-plus-year history the meeting enjoys. Welcome, David!”
