ORLANDO, Fla. — At the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Annual Meeting, Lisa K. Cannada, MD, discussed a study that compared operative with nonoperative treatment for humeral shaft fractures. She said that at 6 months, both groups had higher DASH scores compared with population norms. These findings demonstrated patients did not fully recover.
Lower mortality, complication rates seen with extended DVT prophylaxis for hip fracture surgery
ORLANDO, Fla. — Patients who underwent hip fracture surgery and were prescribed deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis for 28 days or more had a 67% lower chance of death and significantly lower stoke/cerebrovascular and acute kidney injury rates compared with patients prescribed short-duration prophylaxis, according to a presenter at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Annual Meeting.

Pediatric mortality rates related to motor vehicle crashes vary widely throughout the United States, and these variations can even be seen across individual counties, according to findings presented at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress. Researchers said that children have a higher likelihood of surviving a motor vehicle crash when they are closer to a pediatric or adult trauma center.

No difference seen between aspirin, low-molecular-weight heparin as VTE prophylaxis after orthopedic trauma
ORLANDO, Fla. — No difference was seen in bleeding complications among patients who received aspirin compared with low-molecular-weight heparin as venous thromboembolism prophylaxis after orthopedic trauma with the exception of patients who had concomitant abdominal injury.
Advantages seen with use of short vs long nails for patients with hip fractures
ORLANDO, Fla. — Patients with pertrochanteric fractures treated with either short cephalomedullary nails or long cephalomedullary nails had similar outcomes with regard to SF-36 and Harris hip scores, but patients in the short nail group had additional benefits, according to a presenter at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Annual Meeting.
