Patients were more likely to dispose unneeded opioids within 6 weeks of undergoing an elective surgical procedure if they received an activated charcoal bag for in-home disposal, according to a published research letter.
Patients with diabetes on dialysis had greatest readmission, mortality risks after hip fracture surgery
In a study of patients with diabetes who underwent hip fracture fixation surgery, investigators found patients on dialysis had the greatest risk for readmission and mortality compared to patients with CKD and those without CKD.

LAS VEGAS — At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Christopher DiGiovanni, MD, spoke about opioid consumption rates after foot and ankle surgery. He said that, on average, patients consumed less than half of the opioids they were prescribed.
