Surgery for bilateral proximal hamstring tears yields good functional outcomes
Hamstring tears can result in lost time at play for athletes. An article in the March issue of Orthopaedics Today Europe discussed results of surgical repair of bilateral proximal hamstring injuries that proved effective for pain relief and returned half of the patients to their pre-injury activity level. Patients with partial avulsions had higher outcomes scores, the investigators reported. Read more
Physical therapy may help patients with lumbar stenosis avoid surgery
Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis can reduce their chances of surgery within one year if they perform physical therapy, according to researchers who analyzed data from the Spine Patient Outcomes Research Trial (SPORT) to look at the association between physical therapy and long-term outcomes in these individuals.

Throwing rehab program that includes partial pitching may aid recovering pitchers
NEW ORLEANS — Data presented here, at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, constitute the first research to look in-depth at the entire throwing progression that baseball pitchers undergo while rehabilitating a shoulder or elbow surgery. It ultimately supports making changes to the rehabilitation program that is now used, researchers said.
Extended thromboprophylaxis for lower-limb injury, cast immobilization unjustified
The decision to use thromboprophylaxis and when to extend it in a patient is multifactorial. Investigators at Colchester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, in Colchester, United Kingdom, concluded that patients with lower-limb fractures treated with plaster did not require extended thromboprophylaxis if they lacked significant preexisting risk factors.
Study: UCL reconstruction surgery likely to put major league pitchers back on the field
Major League Baseball pitchers who undergo ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction have a strong likelihood of resuming their professional baseball careers after surgery, according to results of a recently published study.
Poor rehabilitation compliance may be to blame for unexpected outcomes
As orthopaedic surgeons, we often have patients who claim they had an unexpected or an inferior outcome from the surgery we performed. The outcome may be inferior compared to what they expected, to what we expected or both. This can cause a dilemma and may be lead to litigation. In my practice as an adult hip reconstruction surgeon, the best example of this is a patient who still has some pain and limp months after surgery. Of course, cases like these will present themselves no matter what you do. However, I wonder how we can be sure the patients followed the prescribed rehabilitation program.
Study: Neuraxial anesthesia, PNB do not increase falls after TKA
Researchers with Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City found that, when compared with general anesthesia, two types of regional anesthesia do not make patients more susceptible to falls in the first days after total knee arthroplasty.
Recurring shoulder instability possibly linked to histopathologic lesions
Recently published research from investigators in Switzerland found what they believed is an association between lesions in the subscapularis muscle and recurrent shoulder instability.
Home-based exercise program improves physical function in patients with hip fractures
The use of a home-based functionally oriented exercise program among patients who had completed standard rehabilitation after hip fracture resulted in modest improvement in physical function at 6 months follow-up.
Hamstring injury severity in soccer players not linked to ultrasound results
Ultrasound scan results had no bearing on professional soccer players’ time missed due to hamstring injuries based on recently published data.
