DALLAS — An electronic patient rehabilitation application used alone or with home health services led to improved patient reported outcomes 12 weeks after total hip arthroplasty and may mitigate the need for home health services in these patients, according to results presented at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting.

Patients who never make it back after ACL injury present opportunities, challenges
In a 2015 publication, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine reported 100,000 to 250,000 ACL ruptures occur annually, and most occur during sporting activities, such as basketball, soccer, skiing and football. Despite advances in ACL surgery, some patients never make it back to sport or usual function. This can be due to technical failure with the treatment or other circumstances, sources told Orthopedics Today.
Orthopedists, physical therapists discuss rehabilitation as it relates to ACL surgery
Injuries to the ACL are among the most common and functionally disabling conditions in orthopedics and sports medicine. The incidence in the United States has increased dramatically in the past 20 years. About 200,000 people sustain an ACL injury annually. In 1994, an estimated 86,687 surgeries for these injuries were performed. By 2013, the yearly number of procedures to treat ACL injuries increased by 58% to 148,714. By far, the female high school athlete is the patient demographic that is undergoing the greatest increase in ACL surgeries annually.
Systematic review explores physical therapy, rehabilitation after lumbar fusion surgery
Using the available level 1 and 2 data regarding postoperative rehabilitation after lumbar fusion for degenerative disc disease, researchers of this systematic review found the literature generally backs formal therapy after this surgery. Based on their results, investigators created a model protocol for rehabilitation.
