Kappa Delta presents awards for musculoskeletal disease, injury research
The Kappa Delta Sorority and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation presented four awards for innovative research in musculoskeletal disease and injury that advanced patient treatment.

SAN DIEGO — Ayesha Rahman, MD, spoke about radiation exposure in pediatric orthopedic patients. She said pediatric orthopedic patients are highly susceptible to adverse effects from exposure to radiation. Rahman said orthopedic surgeons need to understand the radiation exposure dosage, understand the actual dosages of radiation correlated with the types of studies ordered, identify high-risk patients in the pediatric population and understand which studies are best suited for an individual patient.

SAN DIEGO — Luke S. Oh, MD, discussed a study that compared the perceptions of adolescent athletes regarding results of a sports-related injury to their parents’ perceptions regarding their child’s mechanism for coping, such as anxiety, depression and psychological function. Oh said in most areas there was concordance between the athlete’s perception and parents’ perceptions, except for depression level and the effect of the diagnosis on the athlete’s reaction to his or her perception of rehabilitation and surgery potential.
VIDEO: Domb discusses outcomes after arthroscopy for acute, chronic labral tears in adolescents
SAN DIEGO — Benjamin G. Domb, MD, discussed a study that compared hip arthroscopy outcomes of acute vs. chronic labral tears in adolescents at a minimum 2-year follow-up. He said patients with acute labral tears improved more with hip arthroscopy, but had functional outcomes equivalent to patients with chronic labral tears. Domb also noted patients with acute labral tears had a greater rate of secondary operations.
More severe preoperative deformity found in cases of unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis
SAN DIEGO — Results presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting showed pediatric patients with unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis presented with more severe preoperative deformity and had longer operative times.
Greater BMI may delay recovery of hamstring strength after ACL reconstruction in pediatric patients
SAN DIEGO — Although pediatric patients who undergo ACL reconstruction can recover quadriceps and hamstring strength early, patients who are overweight or obese may experience a delay in hamstring recovery, according to results presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting.
