Black children experience higher risk of mortality after surgery
Risk factors for mortality after surgery, including use of ventilation, oxygen support and wound infections, are more prevalent in black children than in white children and pose a significantly greater risk of death, according to research published in Pediatrics.

Athletes with limited range of hip motion had increased progressive degenerative changes
Results published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine showed increased progressive degenerative changes on MRI and radiographs at 5 years among young athletes with limited range of motion of the hip.
An 11-year-old girl with a 3-year history of right ankle pain
The patient is a healthy 11-year-old, girl with chronic, right, posterolateral ankle pain. She has been able to “pop” the tendons on the outside of both ankles for 3 years. She describes the pain as sharp and throbbing which is intermittent in frequency and associated with tightness. She describes moderate relief with lace-up ankle braces and NSAIDs. The pain worsens with any prolonged physical activity. In the past, she had multiple mild ankle injuries as a cheerleader and softball player.
Obese patients at greater risk for infection after adolescent idiopathic scoliosis correction
Patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion for the correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and were obese had a greater risk for postoperative infection, according to results published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Systemic corticosteroid use linked to pediatric bone fractures
Use of inhaled corticosteroids for the treatment of pediatric asthma is not significantly associated with an increased risk in bone fractures in children; however, this correlation is present when children use systemic corticosteroids, according to a study published in JAMA Pediatrics.
Risk of hand, wrist injuries in high school athletes indicates need for prevention efforts
Results from this study indicated high school athletes were at risk for hand and wrist injuries. Findings also showed injury rates and patterns varied by sport and gender, demonstrating a need for sport-specific prevention efforts.
Valve, no valve casts yield similar clinical outcomes for pediatric forearm fractures
Results showed pediatric patients with forearm fractures had no differences in cast-associated complications and fracture stability when treated with no valve, univalve or bivalve casts after closed reduction.
