Bisphosphonate compliance linked to decreased risk of secondary fracture
After one hip fracture, compliant users of bisphosphonates are less likely to undergo a second hip fracture than nonusers, according to results of this study.
Greater insulin resistance linked with decreased bone strength
SAN FRANCISCO — Doubling of insulin resistance was associated with a 10% to 14% decrease in bone strength among participants in the Biomarker Project of the Midlife in the United States Study.

Excessive sodium intake linked with fracture risk in postmenopausal women
SAN FRANCISCO — High sodium intake is associated with an increased risk for non-vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women, independent of age, BMI, bone mineral density, muscle strength and balance ability, according to data presented here.

Steroid injection linked to increased risk of vertebral body fractures
Findings of a recently published retrospective study indicate that patients who undergo lumbar epidural steroid injections may be at increased risk for vertebral fractures.
Teriparatide superior to risedronate for men with osteoporosis
Results from a randomized, open-label, active comparator, phase 3 controlled study demonstrate that a recombinant human parathyroid hormone analog significantly increased lumbar spine volumetric bone mineral density compared with a bisphosphonate in men with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
Study: Most older hip fracture patients lack vitamin D supplementation
Despite a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among senior populations, researchers of this study found that about 20% received vitamin D supplements after hip fracture.
Post-traumatic ulna plus variance associated with poor outcomes for distal radius fractures
Researchers in this study found that post-traumatic ulna plus variance greater than 2 mm was the only factor significantly associated with poor outcome when analyzing a cohort of young patients with unilateral distal radius fractures who were not yet at risk for osteoporosis.
Low bone mineral density, BMI, intradiscal cement leakage may predict vertebral compression fracture
Researchers in this study identified low bone mineral density, low body mass index and intradiscal cement leakage as risk factors for an osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture after vertebroplasty.
Teriparatide/denosumab superior to monotherapy for increased BMD
Results from a randomized controlled trial suggest that combination denosumab and teriparatide was superior to either agent alone at increasing bone mineral density and led to greater improvements than previously reported with any other treatments approved for osteoporosis.
