ORLANDO, Fla. — At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Mandeep Virk, MD, spoke about both surgical and non-surgical techniques to treat young athletes with elbow arthritis. Non-surgical management includes rest, activity modification, anti-inflammatory medications, therapy and intraarticular injections. If this fails, either elbow arthroscopy or debridement is needed.

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Sanjit R. Konda, MD, discussed a study which looked at a predictive model with stigma scores used to predict the in-patient mortality risk with high fidelity in geriatric and middle-aged trauma patients. Results showed the stigma score was able to predict morality risk in both geriatric and middle-aged patients with very high accuracy.

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Sanjit R. Konda, MD, discussed a study which evaluated the reduction protocol, an ultra lose dose CT scanning protocol for orthopedic injury. Results showed the low dose CT scans were similar to conventional CT scans with regards to diagnosing periarticular fractures and imaging quality.

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Themistocles S. Protopsaltis, MD, discussed a study which measured the reliability of lateral intraoperative radiographs inthe prediction of postoperative standing sagittal alignment in patients with spinal deformity. He said spine surgeons need to find the right range of alignment parameters appropriate for the patients’ age when correcting spinal deformity.

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Jonathan Vigdorchik, MD, discussed a study which looked at 3-D MRI and 3-D CT evaluation of osseous osteotomy in femoroacetabular impingement and hip dysplasia. He said orthopedic surgeons should try to avoid or limit radiation with low-dose CTs or MRI reconstructions, especially when dealing with younger, active patients.

Higuera Rueda, MD, discussed a study which evaluated the position of acetabular components after total hip arthroplasty. He said to improve patient-reported outcomes it is may be easier to use the superior and anterior approach to place the acetabular component.

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Steven B. Weinfield, MD, discussed a study which looked at the results in Charcot deformity patients who underwent tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis with either intramedullary (IM) nails or external ring fixation. He said both methods offered similar fusion and stability rates; however, higher complication rates were seen in those treated with IM nails.
