VIDEO: Screening, treatment protocol for Staphylococcus linked with reduced infections after fracture repair
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — At the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Annual Meeting, Saam Morshed, MD, said a screening and treatment protocol for intranasal Staphylococcus aureus infection is important for reducing surgical site infections in patients who undergo surgery for fracture repair.
NuVasive receives expanded FDA 510(k) clearance for magnetic, limb lengthening system
The FDA has granted NuVasive expanded 510(k) clearance for the Precice system from NuVasive Specialized Orthopedics. The expanded indications now include open and closed fracture fixation, treatment for pseudarthrosis, malunions and nonunions, and bone transport.

Within 1 year of spacer placement and removal of infected hip implant, 16% of patients retained spacers
Results from this study demonstrated that at 1 year after removal of a total hip arthroplasty implant followed by placement of a cement spacer for periprosthetic joint infection, 16.8% of patients retained their spacers and 10.8% needed repeat debridement.

K. kingae bacteria in throat linked to bone, joint infection in children
Of the children who experienced bone or joint infection, 71% had the identical Kingella kingae bacterium present in their throats, suggesting that children with osteoarticular infections may benefit from examination for oropharyngeal infections to expedite diagnosis.
EFORT-approved event: Ninth International Knee Arthroplasty Symposium
Every 2 years since October 2001, the Trauma and Musculoskeletal Diseases Foundation and the Zeromski Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery have hosted the International Knee Arthroplasty Symposium. This symposium is an event approved by EFORT, ESSKA and the Polish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.
