Delegates seek better care of patients with orthopedic infections through discussion, consensus
PHILADELPHIA — Several hundred musculoskeletal and infection professionals from 98 countries joined with Jefferson Health and Rothman Institute experts this week at the International Consensus Meeting on Musculoskeletal Infection to convey their judgment on issues of prosthetic joint infection that continue to challenge the orthopedic community and to develop a consensus document that can be used to improve the care of patients affected by musculoskeletal infection.“The second International Consensus Meeting on Musculoskeletal Infection will differ from the first meeting held in 2013,” Javad Parvizi, MD, FRCS, told Healio.com/Orthopedics.
Swelling, time to surgery did not affect wound complications after ankle fracture surgery
BOSTON — Researchers found preoperative ankle swelling and time to surgery were not associated with a change in soft tissue outcomes after ankle fracture surgery. The study also revealed few postoperative wound complications.

A 73-year-old man with acute atraumatic shoulder pain 2 years after reverse TSA
A 73-year-old, right-hand dominant man presented with a 4-day history of right shoulder pain. He underwent reverse total shoulder arthroplasty in that shoulder 22 months prior for cuff tear arthropathy. He was doing well clinically at his last follow-up appointment at 12 months postoperatively, with forward elevation to 120°, abduction to 90°, external rotation to 30° and internal rotation to the level of his sacrum without pain.

Flanigan, MD, discussed a study that set out to determine whether tunnel widening correlated with bacterial biofilms in failed ACL reconstruction. He said the bacterial biofilms correlated with tunnel widening which can lead to biologic failure.
Open fractures from watercraft injuries yielded high rates of infection, amputation
Patients who experienced open orthopedic fractures sustained from watercrafts had a high rate of postoperative infection, nonunion and amputation, according to results published in The Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma.

Time for the next consensus meeting on orthopedic infections
It has been 5 years since the first International Consensus Meeting on Periprosthetic Joint Infection was held. That meeting, held in Philadelphia, was lauded as a success and was attended by 400 delegates from 52 countries. The proceedings of the meeting were published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Arthroplasty and in a book translated into 18 languages that came out after the meeting. More than 30,000 copies of the book were distributed worldwide. The definition of periprosthetic joint infection proposed by the International Consensus Meeting group was adopted by the CDC.
Infection risk increased with perioperative hemoglobin levels after shoulder arthroplasty in patients with diabetes
As perioperative hemoglobin A1c levels increased, risks for wound complications and deep infection increased in patients with diabetes who underwent shoulder arthroplasty, according to a recently published study in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Study: Unfractionated heparin should not be used with aspirin following THA, TKA as VTE prophylaxis
Investigators of a study published in Orthopedics said unfractionated heparin should not be used as an additional mode of venous thromboembolism prophylaxis when aspirin is prescribed in patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty or total knee arthroplasty.
Presenter discusses infection risk, management of open fractures
BOULDER, Colo. — Although the risk of infection may increase with open fracture, early administration of prophylactic antibiotics may decrease this risk, according to a speaker at the International Extreme Sports Medicine Congress.
