Corticosteroid injection in the early postoperative period after knee arthroscopy increased infection risk
ORLANDO — Patients who received corticosteroid injection 2 to 4 weeks after simple knee arthroscopy procedures were associated with a higher rate of complications related to infection, according to results presented here.

LAS VEGAS — At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Brian deBeaubien, MD, and Bryan D. Springer, MD, spoke about an upcoming drug trial for a new treatment for periprosthetic joint infection developed by Joint Purification Systems which uses local antibiotic irrigation. Researchers plan to enroll approximately 200 patients in 15 sites across the United States.

LAS VEGAS — Favorable 10-year results were seen after constrained tripolar liners were used at a single institution for recurrent dislocation hip arthroplasty with dysfunctional hip stabilizers, according to a research presented at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Annual Meeting.

Mike Reed, MD, FRCS, is a full-time hip and knee replacement surgeon with trauma commitments in a busy trauma unit, as well as the clinical director at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom, leading a high-performing team and supported by a group of committed and talented colleagues. His research, supported by industry, charity and government funding, focuses on clinical outcomes and on his specialist interest in infection prevention, diagnosis and management. With Northumbria Healthcare, he is leading large national collaboratives on hip fracture care and enhanced recovery. In addition, Reed supervises basic science research at Newcastle University, which focuses on vitamin D and infection, and particularly biofilm modification with an extracellular DNase. He is also chief investigator for clinical trials on clinical outcomes and infection prevention at the Universities of York and Oxford.

PARK CITY, Utah — Although one-stage exchange is not widely used in North America to treat prosthetic joint infection, a presenter at the Joint Arthroplasty Mountain Meeting said it can be a successful way to manage chronic total joint arthroplasty infection in the right circumstances and with appropriate patient selection.
