VIDEO: Congenital upper extremity amputees have ability to control myoelectric prosthesis
LAS VEGAS — At the American Society for Surgery of the Hand Annual Meeting, Michael S. Gart MD, discussed a study that looked at congenital upper extremity amputees and their ability to control a multidegree-of-freedom myoelectric prosthesis. Results showed patients can control these prostheses and this led to development of a new prosthetic rehabilitation for these patients.
Serum creatine kinase associated with poor outcomes after forearm fasciotomy
LAS VEGAS — Patients who underwent forearm fasciotomy for treatment of acute compartment syndrome experienced poor outcomes when they had elevated serum creatine kinase, according to results presented at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand Annual Meeting.

VIDEO: Increased complications seen in malnourished patients after distal radius fracture surgery
LAS VEGAS — At the American Society for Surgery of the Hand Annual Meeting, Russell E. Holzgrefe, MD, discussed a study that looked at the effect of malnutrition on postoperative complications following distal radius fracture surgery. He said malnourished patients compared with those who were not had a 4.9% higher complication rate, a 3.4% higher rate of readmission, a 2.7% higher rate of reoperation and a 9.2% higher mortality rate.
Suture button suspensionplasty had superior outcomes vs other techniques
LAS VEGAS — Results presented at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand Annual Meeting showed thumb carpometacarpal Mini TightRope (Arthrex) suture button suspensionplasty following trapeziectomy led to less subsidence and better functional outcomes compared with flexor carpi radialis and abductor pollicis longus suspensionplasties.
VIDEO: Epinephrine is safe and effective for hand surgery
LAS VEGAS — At the American Society for Surgery of the Hand Annual Meeting, Asif M. Ilyas, MD, discussed a study that looked at the use of lidocaine with epinephrine in hand surgery. He said there were no complications and that epinephrine is safe and effective when used in hand surgery.
VIDEO: Concomitant corticosteroid injections may increase infection risk in hand procedures
LAS VEGAS — At the American Society for Surgery of the Hand Annual Meeting, Kevin F. Lutsky, MD, discussed a study that looked at the rate of surgical site infections with the use of intraoperative corticosteroid injections in concomitant hand procedures. Lutsky said patients who underwent concomitant cortisone injections on the ipsilateral side of the surgical site had an increased risk of surgical site infections.
Trigger finger release in OR at one center associated with higher cost vs in the procedure room
LAS VEGAS — Trigger finger release performed in the OR was more costly than when performed in the procedure room, according to results for one academic medical center that were presented at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand Annual Meeting.
Repeat injection for De Quervain’s tenosynovitis yielded high success rate
LAS VEGAS — Although multiple, subsequent injections decreased the success rate for treatment of De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, results presented at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand showed a high rate of success with a repeat injection.
Home therapy after endoscopic carpal tunnel release may not improve outcomes
LAS VEGAS — Results presented at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand Annual Meeting showed no differences in improvements of outcomes among patients who did and those who did not receive home therapy after endoscopic carpal tunnel release.
Corticosteroid injection prior to carpal tunnel release increased infection risk
LAS VEGAS — Patients who received a corticosteroid injection within 1 year preoperatively of carpal tunnel release had an increased risk of surgical site infection, according to results presented here.
