NORE: New network of orthopaedic registries to further enhance treatment quality
NORE: This acronym reflects a new initiative of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology to bring more transparency, quality and safety to orthopaedic and traumatology surgery in Europe. We have restructured the mechanism for cooperation and exchanges among orthopaedic registries in Europe, placing them on an innovative basis and creating – through the Network of Orthopaedic Registries in Europe – a new foundation for the optimal use of these valuable data resources, said Ass. Prof. Dr. Per Kjaersgaard-Andersen, Secretary General of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT).

PRAGUE — According to research presented at the 16th EFORT Congress, elevated valgus stress was found in the knees and ankles of patients with pediatric flexible flatfoot.
Amputation for open lower-limb fractures should not be seen as a failure
PRAGUE — Amputation of a limb as a result of an open fracture should not be considered a failure by the patient or medical team, as functional outcomes and quality of life can be better than that achieved with conservative treatment, according to a presenter at the 16th EFORT Congress.
Reduced opioid use and lower pain scores found with use of dual nerve block
Patients who underwent major foot and ankle surgery experienced a reduced need for opioid analgesics, lower pain scores and higher patient satisfaction with the use of two continuous nerve blocks compared with a continuous popliteal block with a single-injection saphenous block, according to study results.
Total ankle arthroplasty can improve outcomes in coronal plane deformity
Although research has shown satisfactory outcomes for total ankle arthroplasty in patients with preoperative coronal plane deformity of greater than 10°, it is still considered a relative contraindication; however, researchers recently reported the effective use of total ankle arthroplasty in a patient with a severe preoperative varus deformity without the need for osteotomy.
MRI showed imaging abnormalities but good clinical results with ACI
CHICAGO — MRI appearance of autologous chondrocyte implantation showed imaging abnormalities at 65.8-month follow-up; however, autologous chondrocyte implantation was still found to produce good clinical results, according to data presented at the International Cartilage Repair Society Annual Meeting, here.
