‘Smart coating’ may lead to safer hip, knee and dental implants

For this study, researchers tested a series of functionally graded hydroxyapatite (FGHA) coatings incorporated with various percentages of silver that were deposited on titanium substrates using ion beam-assisted deposition. The coating creates a crystalline layer next to the implant, and a mostly amorphous outer layer that touches the surrounding bone. The amorphous layer dissolves with time, releasing calcium and phosphate, which encourages bone growth.
