EFORT Awards of the 19th EFORT Congress Barcelona
The EFORT scientific awards are selected among the many high-quality abstracts submitted to the congress. Among the traditional Free Paper and Jacques Duparc (poster) Awards, EFORT last year introduced the EFORT/Medtronic Award for Excellence in Bone Repair Research and this year for the first time, the EFORT Michael Freeman Award. The latter was created in memory of Professor Michael Freeman, one of the founding fathers of EFORT and EFORT President 1994 to 1995, to honor his lifetime contribution to both the European and the International Orthopaedic Community after he passed away in September 2017.

Arthroscopic assistance of core decompressions improved hip AVN staging
BARCELONA, Spain — Patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head were satisfied after treatment that included arthroscopy to stage the condition, followed by core decompression and the application of bone morphogenetic protein or bone marrow aspirate concentrate, according to a surgeon from Dubai who presented results at the EFORT Annual Congress, here.
Results support physical therapy or arthroscopic partial meniscectomy in degenerative knees
BARCELONA, Spain — Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy was as effective as physical therapy in patients with degenerative knees and a confirmed meniscal tear that was non-obstructive, according to results of a multicenter study presented at the EFORT Annual Congress.
Most orthopedic procedures showed decrease in reimbursement from 2000 to 2016
From 2000 to 2016, researchers found a steady decrease in reimbursement for procedures in all orthopedic subspecialties, except for removal of an orthopedic implant. They also found adult reconstruction had the greatest rate of decrease, according to results published in Orthopedics.
Arthroscopy for knee OA did not reduce or delay the need for TKA
Arthroscopy for knee osteoarthritis offered no benefit in reducing or delaying the need for total knee arthroplasty compared with conservative treatment, according to a recently published study.
New approaches for frozen shoulder treatment

Hip arthroscopy alone or combined with PAO improved PROs for acetabular dysplasia
CHICAGO — Results presented at the Arthroscopy Association of North America Annual Meeting showed both hip arthroscopy when performed alone or in combination with periacetabular osteotomy yielded significant improvements for acetabular dysplasia in all patient-reported outcomes at 1-year and 2-year follow-ups.
