Adequacy of deformity correction must be considered in arthroscopic vs open ankle arthrodesis
The appropriate indications for arthroscopic ankle fusion remain a topic of active debate. Several studies have demonstrated rates of nonunion and other complications with the arthroscopic technique that are low and comparable to traditional open approaches for ankle fusion. Despite this, open approaches continue to be widely used. This Orthopedics Today Round Table provides diverse opinions regarding the potential advantages and limits of arthroscopic fusion with regard to the amount of correction possible for patients with associated deformities.
Acellular allograft used to augment endoscopic gluteus medius, minimus repair
Endoscopic hip abductor tendon repair, once a rare procedure, has become more common because the surgical techniques and instrumentation have improved. As our understanding of the arthroscopic anatomy and pathology of the hip has advanced, so has the ability to effectively treat these lesions of the gluteus medius and minimus. Despite these advancements, hip abductor tendon repair failure rates have been reported to be as great as 35%.
Arthroscopic anterior shoulder stabilization yielded high rate of return to sport
SAN DIEGO — Young athletes who underwent arthroscopic anterior shoulder stabilization surgery for shoulder instability had a low reoperation rate and a high rate of return to sport, according to results presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Annual Meeting.
Lipogems receives FDA clearance for adipose tissue transplant system for orthopedic, arthroscopic procedures
Lipogems announced it received FDA clearance for its Micro-fragmented Adipose Tissue Transplant system which uses the body’s own fat tissue.
Allograft placed to augment, add stability to endoscopic gluteus medius repair
This video from Jovan R. Laskovski, MD, and Ryan J. Urchek, MD, shows endoscopic gluteus medius tendon repair being performed with allograft patch augmentation. The allograft patch is fixed with six points of fixation, which creates compression across the entire graft. The technique provides both initial stability and a long-term biologic effect for tendon healing.
Bankart repair with cylindrical biocomposite anchors yielded low rate of anchor hole widening
Regardless of anchor site, results published in Orthopedics showed a low rate of anchor hole widening and excellent ossification among patients who underwent arthroscopic Bankart repair with cylindrical biocomposite anchors made of 70% poly-L-lactide-co-glycolide acid and 30% beta-tricalcium phosphate.
Indirect cost savings of hip arthroscopy may reduce economic burden of FAI syndrome
Hip arthroscopy for treatment of femoroacetabular impingement may provide economic benefits through indirect cost savings that exceed the direct costs of treatment compared with nonoperative management, according to results published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine.
