VIDEO: Know the indications for lateral extra-articular tenodesis with ACL reconstruction

KOLOA, Hawaii — In this video from Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Adam B. Yanke, MD, PhD, spoke about augmenting ACL reconstruction with lateral extra-articular tenodesis using an iliotibial band graft to improve stability.

Yanke, associate professor and vice chair of research in the department of orthopedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center, participated in a panel discussion on indications and techniques for lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET).

“If you’re doing a second-time revision ACL [reconstruction], or it’s the second time around, essentially, then it probably makes sense to consider the LET,” Yanke said. “In patients that have never had an ACL reconstruction done before, if you’re utilizing a soft-tissue graft, certainly a hamstring graft, or there’s hyperlaxity or they’re a competitive athlete, then those might be reasons to consider adding the LET.”
